Associate Director for Development

The Associate Director for Development is a member of FirstWorks’ senior management team with primary responsibility for foundation and corporate giving. S/he connects donors, funders, sponsors and ticket-buyers to the mission of the organization through a variety of development strategies. The ADD must be an excellent writer, analytical thinker, and communicator capable of distilling information into a compelling case for the support of FirstWorks.

FirstWorks is a non-profit arts organization dedicated to building our community by engaging audiences with world-class performing arts and education programs. Since 2004, FirstWorks has attracted 155,000 participants through festivals, performances, season-long themed projects, and arts education. Our resource development program seeks to raise $700,000 annually.

This is a full-time position with benefits.

Primary responsibilities:

  • • Develop and write grant proposals for foundation, corporate, government, and individual support
    • Craft donor communications including acknowledgements, reports, appeals, profiles, and invitations
    • Work with organization leadership to design and implement annual development plan
    • Design and coordinate a program for recognition, involvement and stewardship
    • Create and maintain the annual fundraising pyramid
    • Research, qualify, and cultivate potential funding sources
    • Support the Board fundraising committee and leaders in carrying out the Annual Fund campaign
    • Participate in and conduct solicitations
    • Cultivate and recognize donors at all levels
    • Monitor budget targets and provide reports

Secondary responsibilities:

  • • Devise effective evaluation tools
    • Provide support to sponsorship initiatives
    • Conduct special events for cultivation and fundraising, working with executive staff and board
    • Work with the Development Manager to ensure smooth day-to-day fundraising operations


  • • Bachelor’s degree required
    • Three to five years nonprofit experience and previous grant writing
    • Superior written and verbal communication skills
    • Excellent organizational ability and attention to detail
    • Self-starter with enthusiasm for working as part of a team
    • Knowledge of and passion for the performing and visual arts
    • Facile knowledge/user of software applications (i.e., word processing, spreadsheets, email, search engines, prospect research tools, databases), familiarity with PatronManager/SalesForce a plus
    • Passion for FirstWorks mission and ability to represent the organization

Salary is commensurate with professional experience.
